about

Passengers is a scathing “break-up letter” to society, prompted by the endless pork-choppery of the times. The song jokingly slams the personification of modern-day existence with a list of grievances, such as megalomaniacal politicians, rampant egoism, and toxic masculinity. The chorus screams “I want my money back” in a desperate attempt to obtain some kind of symbolic, metaphorical refund for having been sold a faulty product (existentially speaking).

lyrics

Pick up the telephone, the kid said he can’t wait for anyone.
Good God, a miracle. Keeping up with the fake political.
Lockdown in 21. The future disappeared on everyone.
Still there’s no remedy for death by toxic masculinity.

We go up in arms, in the kitchen.
We resist your charms, and your ambitions.
I’m just a passenger, but you’re asleep at the wheel,
And I want my money back. I want it back.

I want the surgery. I can’t believe that you’ve not heard of me.
So just take a photograph, of John O’Hara’s tombstone epitaph.
We’ve got chemistry but these day’s you can get about anything.
So don’t be so negative. You decide the fucks you want to give.

We go up in arms, in the kitchen.
We resist your charms, and your ambitions.
I’m just a passenger, but you’re asleep at the wheel,
And I want my money back.

Would you come and arrest my soul? I don’t know anything. I don’t know anything.
Would you cut out my life for fun? I don’t know anything. I don’t want anything.
Can we both put down our guns? I don’t know why anymore. I don’t know why anymore.
I just wanted to be someone. I don’t know anything. I don’t know anything.
And we’ve only just begun…

We go up in arms, in the kitchen.
We resist your charms, and your ambitions.
I’m just a passenger, but you’re asleep at the wheel,
And I want my money back.
