about
This Modern Life is a heavy guitar-driven pop song that dredges all that is uncertain in society, looking to find meaning and some semblance of purpose to grasp at.
The song distils thoughts on herd-mentality, cancel-culture, and other negative influences that float in the ether, getting stuck to our brains like psychic sucker fish. It’s not all doom and gloom though. The song also speaks to standing up in the face of all that negativity, and finding someone you can love, and make the best of whatever life throws at you.
It’s a lot to cover in 2 minutes and 10 seconds, but the Rockefeller’s give it a red-hot go. From hardship to hope, and everything in between, it is a massive mess of complexity and chaos we call This Modern Life.
lyrics
Can we start at the start? I guess so.
Will you read my manifesto?
I see you got a lot of questions,
But I don’t know anything. I don’t know anything.
Do you think it’s getting better?
Well, you can’t say that forever.
The world, it will upset her,
So, cancel it, cancel it. Line up and cancel it.
We’re caught inside this modern life.
It can defeat, defeat you.
I’ll take your side, this modern life,
Cause I still, I still need you.
You can’t deny, this modern life,
But some day we will tear it down,
Yeah, some day we will tear it down.
Read the room, cover to cover.
Maybe you just shouldn’t bother.
I don’t really have a problem,
It’s just existentially, we are definitely fucked.
That’s OK, just pay attention.
Don’t expect divine intervention.
I don’t understand the question,
So, cancel it, cancel it. Line up and cancel it.
We’re caught inside this modern life.
It can defeat, defeat you.
I’ll take your side, this modern life,
Cause I still, I still need you.
You can’t deny, this modern life,
But some day we will tear it down,
Yeah, some day we will tear it down.
